Where are the ones who claimed to care?
In this frightening moment, pause. So much is truly under attack that it can be hard to breathe and notice how the democracy movement is coalescing.
Where are the Republicans who care about national security? The ones who claimed to care so much, they called for the ex-Secretary of State to be imprisoned for having non-classified email on a private server? Where are they now that this administration’s national security and defense “leaders” organized a military action on a non-secure app, and included a journalist?
Where are the Republicans who care about the safety of our active duty military and our intelligence operatives? How did they allow this crew of amateur buffoons to take charge?
And what will they do now, the Republicans who claim to care so much about national security, active duty military, and intelligence operatives, now that this administration has shown how little it cares?
We get used to demanding action from Democrats in resistance, but let’s not forget who is causing all this chaos: Republicans who abandoned their oaths of office to show loyalty to a president who will never, ever, return the favor.
Oops, I take that back. This president might pardon them when they are convicted of some felony or other they committed on his behalf.
The outrageous and cavalier dismissal of the responsibility to hold information safely has overshadowed the question of whether this military action in Yemen was justified, wise, or successful. And this is the administration many Americans voted in to keep us out of foreign wars.
Where are all the people who claimed to care about security, military, intelligence, and peace?
In this frightening moment, pause. So much is truly under attack that it can be hard to breathe and notice how the democracy movement is coalescing. Hundreds of thousands have turned out for the Fight Oligarchy tour led by Senator Sanders and Representative Ocasio-Cortez. Ordinary folk are showing up at the few town hall meetings held by Republicans (and lots held by Democrats) and being loud about their displeasure. Phone calls and emails, visits and letters, all flood the offices of the halls of power. Courts are methodically doing the work of checking the power grabs. Veterans and active-duty military are speaking out.
Nothing is inevitable. Everything created by humans can be changed. While the damage is real, deep, and wide, each broken thing, each harmed person, calls us to greater commitment, more resolute action, and deeper compassion.
While they try to shutter democracy, we stay open: holding truth, peace, justice, and love for one and all.
Be safe and well, be resolute, and know you are in good company.
