Solutions at our feet
It is in our own stands against violence, power, destruction, and aggression that solutions lie.
Dear friends:
One week into the new year, much of the news seems harsh indeed.
The war in Europe is about to begin its second year. Russia invaded Ukraine in a stunning act of aggression in February of 2022. Thousands of people have died, food supplies have been destabilized, the rule of law is under attack.
Weather disasters, driven by the climate crisis, continue to decimate areas around the world, or disrupt climate patterns relied upon for centuries to produce food.
In the U.S., a new Congress is being seated that includes members who voted to block the counting of electoral votes in 2021, members who posted ads and imagery involving hunting human beings and murdering their colleagues, and at least one member who blatantly lied about his background. Their power plays regarding choosing a speaker seem a harbinger of damaging refusals to govern on behalf of the people.
The second anniversary of the horrific assault on Congress passed, with accountability processes underway but far from concluded, and too many so-called leaders rewriting the episode to suit their fundraising schemes.
So where do we look for reassurance, hope, and optimism? I suggest we look at where we stand. For it is in our own stands against violence, power, destruction, and aggression that solutions lie.
Passive waiting for “them” to fix problems - whoever “they” might be - is a failed strategy. Cynicism about the inability of problems to be fixed offers the potential for catastrophic neglect. Turning on one another ensures the downfall of our species.
In our relationship with the land, caring for the soil - the ground beneath our feet - is always the place to start. It is right here, where we are, that we must invest our care, our nurturing, and our commitment.
Winter is time for the soil to soak up moisture, rebuild essential fungal and bacterial networks, and prepare to support spring’s growth spurt. This winter offers us a chance to turn away from screens that promote mindless entertainment, violence, and power plays, and to invest deeply in our work for peace, inclusion, and compassion.
Walk outside, nourish yourself, and your community. Spring is on the way.
