An election of cats?
Take these tactics seriously. When dehumanizing propaganda succeeds, violence follows.
This might go down in the annals of history as the election defined by cat memes. And as much as we might laugh and appreciate the use of humor to defang the attacks they represent, we must also acknowledge the deadly seriousness of those attacks themselves.
Whether aimed at women or immigrants, the comments have one purpose: dehumanization.
Human beings have strong resistance to harming our own species. It is an evolutionary advantage to collaborate rather than compete. But so-called leaders who seek power can overcome that resistance with propaganda designed to make us believe an “enemy” group is not human.
When this propaganda succeeds, violence follows. As we’ve seen in Springfield. As we’ve seen in history.
One presidential campaign and its allies and surrogates are actively engaged in dehumanization of women and immigrants, and when challenged, they double down.
Laughter is a tremendously useful response, especially as it illuminates the deep insecurity of those promulgating the dehumanizing memes.
But take these tactics seriously. They are no joke. Our response must include vigorous defense of the humanity of everyone.
Humanize everyone, make decisions based on compassion, seek understanding, and together we will build strong, inclusive communities.
