11/8/2020 sigh of relief and carrying on
We exhaled a big sigh of relief yesterday as we learned that the ticket of Joseph Biden and Kamala Harris earned the majority of electoral college votes. Analysts and journalists will parse the results of the vote for months. We should be able to learn a great deal more about ourselves from their work.
While the choice of president is critical to the work ahead, it is not sufficient. No single individual or political party can fix all that ails our country. So, now we breathe, rest, and begin recuperation. We brace ourselves for the potential for a chaotic transition. And in all of this, the words of Karen Murphy (Facing History and Facing Ourselves) stand out:
"One thing we have to do is restore truth. The basis of democracy is relationships. And trust is the glue.
"...this thing that we hope that we are striving for, which is to actually imagine repair, reconstruction, accountability, is not going to be in a straight line. It’s going to be messy. It’s going to be multigenerational. What we should strive for is creating opportunities for learning, including from ourselves and other models... creating a foundation so that the young people who are in high school now have firmer ground to stand upon. This is a marathon. And we need to carry the baton a certain distance for them."
Blessings upon you for being willing to carry the baton. We can do this, together.
Love and gratitude,
Liz
